Life Inside Vault 333
Life in the vault can be both simplistic and complicated. Like any group of people closed in tight confinements for any length of time, the people here can be restless, and often see problems where there simply are none. Vault 333, being the largest vault built in the entire US, is vast enough to accommodate three times its current capacity, however it is a finite space. Therefore the vault dwellers carefully follow a strict set of rules and laws. It limits the amount of children a family can have, and many laws are reason for "disposal", which means removal from the vault. Life outside the vault door is a terrifying unknown to the people of the vault, however the overseeer, and her Vault Guard, will not hesitate to remove people and send though out into the world with a small kit. It has long been speculated this is a type of population control, but any attempt to expose it in the past has been met with brute force.
Made entirely of thick steel walls, and spanning for miles deep under the earth, vault 333 features a grand total of six levels, all of which boast nearly twenty wings for varying reasons. All levels are self sustaining with hydroponic farms, their own generator for power, water filtration, air scrubbers, diners, bars, and dozens of living accommodations from bunk rooms, to family apartments for those well off in the vault society. Many areas of the vaults main level are forbidden to normal vault dwellers. The main level is home of the overseer, her family(if she ever has one), the main power supply, ground surveillance, guard stations and bunk rooms, armory, main control station for all water supply, and, at its head, the vault door. Many vault dwellers live their entire lives without ever seeing the first level of the vault, and nearly all of them know nothing of the outside world, or the decision to keep them sealed within.
The vault hierarchy is extremely simplistic. Above all is the Overseer, a single individual tasked with all security, all rules, laws, and decisions that must be made for the entire vault. Everyone answers to the overseer, and the overseer must be able to handle this. The overseer answers to no one, though they can answer to the people if the people become to upset with them, therefore their main focus is often to keep the people appeased, and, more often than not, in the dark. Directly beneath the overseer is the General, the lead of the guard, whom is in the Overseers confidence at all times, and knows all secrets of the vault. The General is tasked with complete control of the entire vault guard, and all security within the vault. The General is also tasked with continued surveillance of the outside world, and sometimes excursions outside the vault(though this is secret, and not many dwellers know of this). Directly below the overseer are also the Lead Scientist, head of all research and development within the walls of the vault. The lead scientist will work tirelessly to find ways to expand their resources, and find a way for life in the vault to continue long term. The head of vault maintenance, whom is in charge of maintaining all vault mechanics, and breaks. Radiation leaks are prevented, or cleaned up, by his team, and he tasks specific members of his team to vault door duty, whose job it is to be sure the door is constantly well maintained to keep it from being broken into. All other vault dwellers, with the exception of the Vault Guard, are under this single group of individuals.
Every dweller has their place in the mechanics of he vault. From the farms, to the dining rooms, to power and water, there is a place for everyone, and everyone is in their place. At the age of seventeen, all vault dwellers take a placement test, referred to as the G.O.A.T., the General Occupational Aptitude Test. This test is meant to rate your ability to do various jobs around the vault. Jobs include, but are not limited to, Haridresser, Launderer, Garbage Burner, Physician, Teacher, Engineer, Counselor, Shift supervisor, and even Security. While Security is listed on the possible outcomes to encourage students to reach for it, it is not actually a possibility to be chosen from the test. Members of the Vault Guard are hand chosen by both the General and the Overseer.
